(Naples, FL, February 1, 2008) -- Splash Week is a FREE five-day program that teaches children water safety practices and basic swimming skills along with YMCA core character values -- caring, honesty, respect, and responsibility. The program is FREE for any preschool or school-aged child ages 3-12 in the community.
Swimming is considered to be a life survival skill and the YMCA considers learning how to swim one of the most important skills a child can learn. Consider these alarming statistics:
- With the abundance of water and residential pools, the state of Florida ranks 3rd in the country in all drowning fatalities
- Drowning is the 3rd leading cause of accidental death for children under the age of 5 and the 2nd leading cause for persons ages 5-44.
All sources point out that learning how to swim is the best defense against drowning. Swim instruction is crucial to protecting our children from injury and death. The YMCA’s Splash Week is a major step toward a solution. The YMCA’s goal is to have over 400 children participate in the program and we want to let the community know about this FREE event. Advance registration is required.
